NEA Big Read Wichita Keynote: Un Mango Grows in Kansas

Wichita Big Read 2022 Book

Join us for a keynote address by Kansas author and poet Huascar Medina.  He is the 2019-2022 Poet Laureate of Kansas and currently resides in Lawrence.  As a Latino living in Kansas, Medina has experienced firsthand the “otherness” spoken of by Esperanza in Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street.  His poems capture the sense of place, the search for identity, and the need for belonging that we read about in this year’s NEA Big Read selection.

NBF Presents: The Power of Choice

National Book Foundation Presents LOGO

National Book Award–honored author and Kansas native Lucas Bessire (Running Out: In Search of Water on the High Plains, 2021 Nonfiction Finalist) and Megha Majumdar (A Burning, 2020 Fiction Longlist) examine how access and power operate in their work—from an environmental disaster in the US to a fictionalized nationalist uprising in India. Join the authors for readings and conversation moderated by Huascar Medina, Kansas Poet Laureate. Presented in partnership with the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.
